Revolutionary and Current: Womb Chair by Knoll

The famous Womb Chair by Knoll is celebrating its 75th anniversary. This one of the most iconic creations by Eero Saarinen, commissioned by Florence Knoll in 1948.

The Womb Chair upended the traditional concept of the armchair by proposing innovative technologies (glass fibre and resin) and shapes, a unique design and also a type of functionality that defies categorization.

Florence Knoll would explain: "I was tired of armchairs that would allow a person to sit in one position only. I wanted to break the mould and create an armchair that resembled a basket full of cushions, a soft refuge where one could simply roll up in a ball.”

Eero Saarinen explained that the armchair was based on the idea that many people never feel truly safe and at ease in the world after leaving their mother’s womb. What name would have been better than Womb for this iconic piece? Still produced in line with the original design, it remains one of Knoll’s most popular pieces, upholstered by artisans just like back in the day.
